Why was the alternate Act II, Scene II of the Crucible (woods scene) dropped after the Martinique '58?
i'm not sure if you are looking for a researched response, which you seem quite able to perform yourself, i would assume, or an informed guess. the woods scene, upon viewing, has an unfortunate tendency to humanize abby, in the modern world, she would in fact be admired, because of her passion, a common theme, which outweighs her 'murders' which is what they were. it wasn't the scene that didn't fit, it was the society viewing it. miller's parrallel with mccarthyism/blacklisting would be lost to an audience who preferred peyton place to anything with depth.
