HOW TO "listen to", music of the MODERN ERA: I'm either.......befuddled, or just simply TURNED OFF by it?

Listen to what you like. I like people who dislike mainstream and new music. I myself listen to what I want, and it's not rock, pop or any crap there is. I also like some Fallout style music, oldies in general.
